She holds a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from the College of Engineering, Guindy, which is affiliated with Anna University. Upon graduation, she began working as a Research and Development Analyst before being promoted to Business Development Manager. She worked with Mani Ratnam’s assistant director, Shelley, on a short film titled Maane Theyne Ponmaane.
A role in Balaji Sakthivel’s Ra Ra Rajasekhar was offered to her, but the project did not materialize. Following this, she made her acting debut with the low-budget film Dummy Tappasu (2015). She was recommended to Raju Murugan by the team of Ra Ra Rajasekhar, who subsequently signed her on for Joker (2016). In the film, she played the role of a village belle.
Samuthirakani appreciated Ramya’s performance in Joker and asked her if she would be interested in playing a mother working for an IT company in Aan Devathai (2018).
