Lee’s mother was Italian, and her father was American. Albeit intrigued by music from youth, she was not officially prepared. She and friends started the six-piece band O’Seis when she was in her teens. She, Sérgio Baptista, and Arnaldo Dias Baptista formed the rock band Os Mutantes in the middle of the 1960s, now down to three members; In 1971, she wed the latter. Gilberto Gil helped the group, which broke new ground musically but didn’t always please the more traditional Brazilian audiences. During its about six years of presence, the band likewise visited Europe.
