After receiving her Food Certification from the French Culinary Institute, Sarma and Mr. Matthew Kenney opened their first Commissary in 2001. Matthew is also an author and a chef. Her commissary closed in 2003 after a brief existence. Sarma Melngailis sought advice from the China Grill Management firm of Jeffrey Chodorow. In June 2004, Miss Sarma, he, and Matthew Kenney opened the New York City restaurant Pure Food and Wine. It was New York City’s first Raw Food restaurant.

Her restaurant has previously received two New York Magazine awards. For nearly five years, Forbes included it on its list of “All-Star New York Eateries.” Additionally, it was listed as one of Forbes’ Top 100 Restaurants.

Her store received packed snacks from Pure Food and Wine. She and Matthew Kenney opened One Luck Duck Juice, a takeout restaurant, in 2005. Additionally, it offers books, supplements, skincare, and other products.
